Defense Feeds – Serbia has introduced its new 203mm TSMB self-propelled mortar carrier during the Partner 2025 defense exhibition in Belgrade, signaling a significant step forward in European artillery technology.
This wheeled, high-caliber mortar system blends substantial firepower with agility, making it a formidable asset on the modern battlefield.
The newly revealed 203mm TSMB mortar carrier is built on a FAP 2026 6×6 tactical truck chassis, offering a solid balance between heavy firepower and battlefield mobility.
Unlike traditional stationary or towed artillery pieces, the self-propelled mortar can rapidly reposition, enhancing survivability in dynamic combat conditions.
This mobility allows for shoot-and-scoot tactics, where the system fires accurately before quickly relocating to avoid counterattacks.
At the core of the system is a modernized variant of the M-65 howitzer, adapted with a 203mm barrel extension.
This upgrade extends its firing range to between 6 and 12.5 kilometers, suitable for engaging a broad range of targets from fortified bunkers to entrenched enemy positions.
Its rate of fire reaches up to three rounds per minute, firing 100 kg shells equipped with a powerful 28 kg explosive charge capable of inflicting damage across a 75-meter radius, making it highly effective for saturation bombardment and specialized combat roles.
The mortar vehicle carries a crew of four, including the driver, commander, gunner, and an assistant gunner. An automated loading system supports efficient firing sequences and sustained operation during intense engagements.
The ammunition range is diverse — from high-explosives, cluster rounds, and thermobaric warheads to rocket-assisted projectiles — granting commanders maximum tactical versatility for mountainous terrain, urban conflict zones, or open field battles.
What truly distinguishes the TSMB system is its integration of advanced electronic fire control technologies. This includes an inertial navigation system paired with a digital ballistic computer loaded with embedded targeting algorithms.
These enable precise aiming with rapid target acquisition and first-round hit capability, a major boost for accuracy in fast-evolving combat scenarios.
The system’s digital architecture supports encrypted communication via secure radios, allowing seamless coordination with command units and other artillery assets.
The dedicated gunner terminal provides real-time targeting data and situational awareness, ensuring accurate fire missions with minimal human error and downtime.
In terms of firing mechanics, the mortar boasts an elevation capability from 0° up to a steep 75°, while its horizontal traverse covers an effective azimuth angle of ±23.5°.
This flexibility allows wide-area coverage without constantly repositioning the vehicle, a key factor in maintaining firing cadence and operational tempo.
The vehicle itself can travel at speeds up to 80 kilometers per hour and has an operational range of about 600 kilometers, underlining its rapid deployment and endurance on various terrains.
Weighing under 19 tons, the 203mm TSMB mortar carrier offers a relatively lightweight heavy artillery solution.
Mounted on a rugged 6×6 FAP truck frame, it suits both national defense needs and the export markets aiming for cost-efficient but powerful artillery systems.
