Defense Feeds – Hanwha Rolls Out Wheeled K9 Artillery as South Korea’s leading defense manufacturer, Hanwha Aerospace, officially begins production of a new wheeled variant of its renowned K9 Thunder self-propelled howitzer.

This advanced model is designed to meet rising global demand for mobile artillery systems offering enhanced speed, flexibility and ease of deployment.

The company announced that initial testing for the new K9 howitzer variant will commence in early 2026, representing a major milestone in its expanding artillery portfolio.

Unlike the traditional tracked K9 system, the Hanwha Rolls Out Wheeled K9 Artillery model is developed for customers operating in regions with modern road networks where rapid maneuverability and logistical efficiency are essential.

Its modular, truck-compatible architecture allows integration with multiple vehicle platforms depending on mission requirements, giving military operators a wider range of operational options.

Built upon the latest K9A2 platform, this upgraded version maintains the K9 family’s legacy of reliability and firepower while incorporating advanced features like automated ammunition loading and improved fire control systems.

Through the Hanwha Rolls Out Wheeled K9 Artillery initiative, the company strengthens its role as a major global supplier of next-generation self-propelled artillery, positioning itself to meet the evolving demands of both allied and emerging defense markets.

Record-Breaking Range with Extended 58-Caliber Gun

The most notable upgrade is a 58-caliber, 155mm barrel that reaches approximately 9 meters, setting a new record for artillery barrel length in operational service.

This engineering advancement pushes the system’s firing range to over 70 kilometers, representing a major leap beyond conventional self-propelled artillery capabilities.

Such range opens new tactical possibilities for commanders seeking extended fire support with fewer assets in the field.

By reducing the number of repositioning maneuvers required, the weapon enhances both survivability and combat efficiency.

Notably, the extended barrel design overcame several technical challenges that hindered earlier attempts, such as the US Army’s failed 58-caliber project, which suffered from severe barrel wear.

Hanwha’s engineers reportedly solved these issues using advanced materials and improved barrel treatments.

A Strategic Push for New Defense Markets

Hanwha’s decision to develop this wheeled K9 variant was influenced by its earlier loss in the UK’s Multi-Purpose Howitzer (MPH) program to European rival KNDS and its RCH 155 system.

Rather than a setback, that event spurred Hanwha to pivot strategically, focusing on other major opportunities such as the United States, which is exploring modern replacements for its aging 155mm artillery fleet.

In 2024, Hanwha was one of five defense companies selected to participate in the US Army’s Mobile Tactical Cannon evaluation program.

The competition aims to identify next-generation, self-propelled systems adaptable to future battlefield requirements.

Defense experts note that with over 1,800 K9 howitzers already produced and exported to Finland, India, Australia and Norway, Hanwha stands in a solid position to compete in the American defense sector.

According to reports from Bizhankook and National Defense Magazine, Hanwha plans to leverage lessons learned from previous tenders while advancing its global ambitions for artillery dominance.

The company’s approach aligns with a broader defense-industrial strategy that emphasizes interoperability with NATO and allied standards.

Tailoring the K9 for US Operations

To enhance its appeal to the US defense establishment, Hanwha Defense USA is offering to adapt both its wheeled and tracked K9 models to meet American military specifications.

Jason Pak, Senior Director of Business Development for Land Systems at Hanwha Defense USA, noted that the company aims to establish a domestic supply chain to support long-term production and sustainment in the US.

Pak stated that Hanwha could begin “rapid deliveries from Korea if needed,” with parallel efforts to transition full-scale manufacturing to US facilities soon after.

This approach is designed to create American jobs, encourage technology transfer, and strengthen defense cooperation between Seoul and Washington.

Hanwha’s US-focused version will reportedly include a customized fire control system, advanced automation, and upgrade options compatible with future artillery enhancements.

The company’s initiative comes as the US Army evaluates its next-generation fire support systems, potentially opening a new market worth billions.

Merging long-range capability, mobility and growth potential, Hanwha’s wheeled K9 howitzer is set to transform artillery warfare, showcasing Korean engineering excellence and tactical adaptability valued by armed forces globally.
