Defense Feeds – Final C-295 Export to India marks a major milestone in the country’s defense modernization, as India has received the last batch of 16 Airbus C-295 military transport aircraft from Spain well ahead of schedule by two months.
This delivery completes the initial overseas export phase for the Indian Air Force’s crucial plan to upgrade its airlift capabilities.
The final handover occurred at Airbus Defence and Space’s assembly line in Seville, Spain, with Indian Ambassador to Spain Dinesh K Patnaik and senior IAF officials present.

The acquisition of the C-295 aircraft represents a significant upgrade for India’s military transport fleet, replacing the aging Avro Hawker Siddeley 748 models that have been in service since the 1960s.
The C-295 is a versatile tactical airlifter, well-suited to carry out troop transport, cargo delivery, maritime patrol, reconnaissance, medical evacuation, and other critical missions.
Its specifications highlight its operational efficiency: the aircraft measures about 24 meters in length with a wingspan of 26 meters.
Powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW127G turboprop engines, each delivering 2,644 horsepower through six-bladed propellers, the C-295 boasts a maximum speed of 482 kilometers per hour and can operate up to an altitude of 30,000 feet.
It is capable of transporting more than 70 personnel or up to 9,250 kilograms of cargo over a range of 5,000 kilometers, making it an indispensable asset for the IAF’s varied logistical requirements.
This military transport aircraft is widely regarded for its reliability and adaptability, serving various roles beyond transport, including airborne early warning, signals intelligence, and even armed close air support in some configurations.
The delivery of the final batch from Spain is an important step toward enhancing India’s operational reach and readiness.
While the first 16 C-295 units were delivered fully assembled from Spain, Indian manufacturing for this program has already begun in earnest.
The remaining 40 aircraft under the $2.5 billion contract will be produced domestically by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) at their state-of-the-art final assembly line in Vadodara, Gujarat.
This facility, inaugurated jointly by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in late 2024, represents the first private sector military aircraft assembly line in India.
This initiative marks a significant advancement in India’s push for defense self-reliance through the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ programs.
Beyond meeting military needs, the project is expected to invigorate India’s aerospace industrial base by creating jobs, fostering high-end engineering skills, and encouraging innovation in aviation technologies.
The Tata-Airbus collaboration is also viewed as a strategic step in positioning India as a future hub for military aircraft manufacturing and potential exports.
As India moves towards manufacturing the bulk of the C-295 fleet domestically, the aerospace ecosystem around this project is developing rapidly, with full lifecycle support expected to enhance India’s defense manufacturing capabilities dramatically.
