Alakran Mobile Mortar System Enhances Ukraine’s Artillery Capabilities

For the first time, this advanced system is being used in active combat operations by Ukraine’s 210th Separate Assault Regiment. URO VAMTAC and Alakran: A Seamless Integration

The Alakran’s integration with the URO VAMTAC (Vehículo de Alta Movilidad Táctico), a 4×4 tactical vehicle developed by the Spanish company UROVESA, is central to its success. Often likened to the U.S. Humvee for its off-road capabilities, the VAMTAC is a versatile platform designed for a range of roles, including troop transport, reconnaissance, command and control, and weapon deployment.

Powered by a robust turbocharged diesel engine, the VAMTAC delivers speed and reliability in challenging terrain. Its modular design allows it to adapt to various mission needs quickly, from carrying troops to mounting advanced systems like the Alakran mortar. With a high payload capacity and unmatched mobility, the VAMTAC ensures that the Alakran can be rapidly deployed to dynamic and unpredictable combat zones.

The Alakran mobile mortar system, engineered by Milanion NTGS, is recognized as the world’s lightest mobile mortar carrier. Its design addresses the critical challenges of modern warfare, offering unmatched precision, speed, and versatility.

Capable of integrating 120mm and 81mm mortars, the system features a unique barrel cooling mechanism that enables sustained firing at a rate of 16 rounds per minute. This capability eliminates the downtime associated with traditional mortar systems, allowing for continuous, high-intensity operations.

The Alakran’s fully digital Fire Control System (FCS) ensures pinpoint accuracy, with a deviation of only 2 meters at a range of 1 kilometer. This precision minimizes collateral damage while maximizing combat effectiveness. Lightweight and compact, the Alakran can be mounted on various 4×4 vehicles and even transported by helicopter, making it ideal for rapid-response missions in difficult-to-access areas.

A Strategic Alliance: Spain’s Support for Ukraine

The deployment of the Alakran highlights the growing defense cooperation between Spain and Ukraine. As part of a €1 billion military aid agreement finalized in 2024, Spain has supplied a wide array of advanced equipment, including Leopard 2A4 tanks, Patriot missile systems, and artillery platforms like the Alakran. By November 2024, Spain had delivered €600 million worth of military assets, with an additional €300 million scheduled for future shipments.

Beyond supplying hardware, Spain has also trained Ukrainian personnel to operate these systems effectively. In early 2023, Spanish experts trained 55 Ukrainian tank crews and technicians on the operation and maintenance of Leopard 2 tanks. This hands-on training ensures that Ukraine can fully integrate and utilize its newly acquired assets.
