Defense Feeds – Carl-Gustaf M4 Anti-Tank Weapons have been officially ordered by the Danish Ministry of Defence under a $54 million contract with Swedish defense manufacturer Saab.
The procurement, worth 510 million Swedish krona, includes delivery of rifles, ammunition, and training equipment scheduled for 2026 to 2028.
The acquisition continues Denmark’s long history with the Carl-Gustaf system, locally known as Dysekanon, first introduced in the 1970s.
The updated Carl-Gustaf M4 Anti-Tank Weapons, integrated into Denmark’s arsenal in 2022, represent a major step in modernizing its portable firepower against armored threats in dynamic battlefield conditions.
Weighing just under 7 kilograms and measuring less than one meter in length, the Carl-Gustaf M4 provides high mobility without sacrificing firepower.
Its compact frame allows soldiers to operate effectively in confined urban zones or rugged terrain where maneuverability is critical. The latest version reflects Saab’s emphasis on ergonomics and custom adaptability.
It features an improved shoulder rest, adjustable front grip, and multiple Picatinny rails for mounting optics or accessories.
These upgrades simplify handling during prolonged missions and ensure compatibility with modern infantry gear setups.
Beyond its physical design, the M4 also integrates smart technologies that enable faster engagement and more efficient targeting, enhancing situational awareness and precision.
According to Saab’s head of Dynamics, Görgen Johansson, the Carl-Gustaf M4 delivers superior precision and adaptability, allowing the Danish Armed Forces to respond effectively to diverse threats across different operational theaters and mission profiles.

One of the key advantages of the Carl-Gustaf M4 Anti-Tank Weapons system lies in its exceptional ammunition flexibility and combat adaptability.
The man-portable launcher can fire a broad range of ammunition types, including anti-tank, anti-structure, smoke, illumination, and multi-role rounds, allowing soldiers to adapt quickly to different battlefield conditions.
This wide compatibility makes the Carl-Gustaf M4 a vital asset for both conventional operations and asymmetric warfare, providing infantry units with the capability to engage enemy armor, vehicles, and fortified positions.
The weapon’s modular design supports future ammunition innovations, ensuring continued relevance as battlefield technology evolves.
Notably, the M4 employs Saab’s advanced programmable munitions such as the HE 448 and the Guided Multipurpose Munition (GMM).
The GMM introduces precision-guided functionality, allowing soldiers to engage moving and stationary targets with pinpoint accuracy at distances exceeding 2,500 meters.
Combined with its lightweight design and advanced targeting optics, this upgrade enables ground units to neutralize heavily armored threats or entrenched defenses while minimizing collateral damage and maximizing mission efficiency.

The new order represents a continuation of the long-standing partnership between Saab and the Danish defence sector.
Denmark’s renewed investment in the Carl-Gustaf family highlights its trust in the system’s proven reliability and Saab’s consistent support in training, logistics, and maintenance.
Saab has steadily upgraded the Carl-Gustaf line since the M1 version debuted in the late 1940s, evolving it into a versatile multi-mission weapon recognized by NATO and allied militaries worldwide.
Today, the M4 model is in service with more than a dozen countries, appreciated for its accuracy, reloadability, and battlefield endurance.
For Denmark, the modernization effort aligns with a broader push to enhance its ground forces’ readiness and interoperability within NATO frameworks.
The Carl-Gustaf M4’s integration complements existing infantry systems and ensures that Danish units remain equipped to handle emerging hybrid threats.
Saab reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Copenhagen’s defense modernization programs, with Görgen Johansson emphasizing mutual cooperation and long-term capability growth.
“Our collaboration with Denmark goes back decades, and we’re proud to continue delivering combat-proven technologies that reinforce operational effectiveness,” he stated in an official company release.
